How Post-9/11 Tools Have Been Used for U.S. Immigration Enforcement

Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks of Sept 11, 2001 led to a dramatic expansion of the U.S. national security infrastructure, the Trump administration has repointed many tools to detect, detain, and deport noncitizens.

Created for counterterrorism, a slew of post-9/11 tools have been repurposed by the Trump administration in service of routine immigration enforcement. 

The federal government’s heightened ability to collect and analyze vast quantities of information is one legacy of the foundational changes made in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
