Jan Holton

Dr. Jan Holton is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Pastoral Theology and Care at Duke Divinity School. Her work focuses on the psychodynamic implications of trauma and forced displacement, intercultural dynamics within traditional pastoral care, and pastoral care to marginalized populations. In her book Longing for Home, Dr. Holton examines the psychological, social, and theological impact of forced displacement on communities in eastern Congo and South Sudan, tribes in Uganda, and veterans and people experiencing homelessness in the United States. In addition to teaching, Dr. Holton served with the Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services, is a consulting chaplain at Duke University Hospital, and is an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church. 

She holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University, a Master of Divinity from Union Presbyterian Seminary, and a BA from Randolph Macon College.

She is a member of the Advisory Council for the Religion and Refugees Project from MPI’s Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative.
