There has been significant public debate about the admission of Syrian refugees to the United States via the refugee resettlement program.

In the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015 and Brussels in 2016, U.S. lawmakers in state capitols and in Washington have questioned whether the resettlement program could serve as a gateway for terrorists, notwithstanding the fact that applicants are subjected to more rigorous screening than for any other group of foreign travelers to the United States.
