MPI Europe Internships

MPI Europe Internships

The Migration Policy Institute Europe (MPI Europe), established in Brussels in 2011, is a nonprofit, independent research institute that aims to provide a better understanding of migration in Europe and thus promote effective policymaking. MPI Europe provides authoritative research and practical policy design to governmental and nongovernmental stakeholders who seek more effective management of immigration, immigrant integration, and asylum systems as well as successful outcomes for newcomers, families of immigrant background, and receiving communities in Europe.

MPI Europe is seeking candidates for a full-time internship in Brussels, which offers a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and practical experience working with experts in a wide range of policy areas, including EU immigration and asylum systems, labour migration, and immigrant integration. The internship also offers individuals the opportunity to collaborate directly with policy analysts and senior management, and potentially author research. Successful candidates will also be involved in the organisation of external MPI Europe events, which can help enrich their professional networks.

The deadline for applications is 30 January, and the successful candidates will start in February/March.

Profile

The intern will provide support to the MPI Europe team, including senior management. Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field and possess excellent oral and written communication skills. They should be able to work both independently and as part of a team, be well organised and have the ability to handle a wide array of tasks, which can range from research activities to event organisation.

Duties of an intern may include:

  • Contributing to overall research efforts, including through independent quantitative and/or qualitative research and policy analysis
  • Writing paper drafts and preparing literature summaries
  • Assisting in the dissemination of publications
  • Providing administrative support on migration-related events
  • Attending and summarising relevant public and private events to which MPI Europe staff have been invited
  • Undertaking administrative tasks, including assistance to senior management.

Skills in languages other than English and the ability to work with Microsoft Access prove helpful for certain projects, as do strong quantitative research skills.

Internship Details and Conditions

The internship will last six months. The intern will be offered a “convention d’immersion professionnelle” (or “beroepsinlevingsovereenkomst”), which foresees a payment of 1310,15 euros per month. Lunch vouchers for each working day will be offered as well. Relocation expenses are not covered.

Applicants must be eligible to work in Belgium.

Minority applicants and/or applicants from immigrant or refugee backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Only applications from university graduates will be considered for this opening. Master’s students and PhD candidates who are still enrolled at a university can apply, provided that they have obtained their undergraduate degree and that they won’t be expected to participate in university courses during the period of the internship.
