Modeling Potential U.S. Legal Immigration Cuts, by Category and Top Countries, FY 2016

This interactive tool shows how potential changes to U.S. legal immigration policy would affect top sending countries. Users can see which countries would experience the largest immigration cuts, in number and share, under different proposals to eliminate current permanent immigration categories such as the diversity visa or individual family-sponsored preferences.

The data tool displays admissions of new legal permanent residents (LPRs, or green-card holders) by major class of admission in fiscal year (FY) 2016. To model different scenarios, select which immigration pathway(s) to eliminate (by default, the diversity visa is selected) by using the dropdown menu at top right. The tool will display the top 20 countries projected to experience the largest numeric reduction by category, based on FY 2016 inflows. It also displays the percentage reduction in a country’s overall immigration, and allows users to sort countries by numeric or percentage reduction.

Notes:

1) Refers to immigrants who obtained U.S. legal permanent residence during a given fiscal year ending on September 30, although they could have arrived in the United States in earlier years.

2) Data on unmarried adult children of LPRs and spouses and unmarried children under 21 of LPRs by country of birth are from State Department’s immigrant visa issuance statistics; all other data come from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of Immigration Statistics.

3) The number of new LPRs from certain countries for some classes of admission has been represented by a "D" when small numbers have not been disclosed by DHS for confidentiality reasons. These countries are not included in the data tool. The full dataset with data on all countries of origin included can be found in the accompanying excel sheet.
