Estimated Number of International Migrants Residing in Africa and Their Share of the Total Population, by Country: 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010

Estimated Number of International Migrants Residing in Africa and Their Share of the Total Population, by Country: 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010

Note: This is an interactive chart that shows how the number of international migrants residing in African countries and the percentage they represented in the total population have changed between 1990 and 2010. Under the tab “Size,” select either “Number of international migrants” or “% of the total population.” Click the “Play” button to see the changes over time. To view individual values, scroll over the colored bubbles. The color refers to a given region; the bubble denotes a specific country. A region-level chart is available here.

The estimates are only for 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010. The intermediate years are rough proxies only.

Notes:

Migration estimates were derived from “Trends in Total Migrant Stock: The 2008 Revision” published by the United Nations Population Division. The UN uses many different data sources to generate these estimates, including a) administrative registers, such as population registers; b) other administrative sources, such as residence or work permits; c) border statistics collected at ports of entry and departure; and c) censuses and surveys.

Many countries around the world, especially more developed countries, generate enough data on international migration to provide a good statistical basis on which to estimate levels and trends. For some countries, however, the information is very limited or unavailable and, in these cases, data imputations were made. Also, the definitions and concepts used by various countries to produce international migration statistics can significantly reduce the comparability of the data.
