Brian Grant is Deputy Director of MPI’s International Program and is responsible, along with MPI President Demetrios Papademetriou, for coordinating and guiding the activities of the International Program.

Prior to joining MPI, Mr. Grant held a number of senior positions with the government of Canada. His final assignment was as Director General of International and Intergovernmental Relations at Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Mr. Grant was the head of the Canadian delegation at many international forums and bilateral meetings related to migration. He was the lead Canadian negotiator on the NAFTA chapter on the movement of business persons. In addition, he worked for 2 ½ years for the UK immigration service as part of a senior-level exchange between Canada and the United Kingdom. On domestic immigration issues, Mr. Grant had lead responsibility for relations with Canada’s ten provinces and three territories, which share a constitutional role in managing Canada’s immigration program, and with the increasing number of cities and other stakeholders that were becoming active in immigration issues. He also had primary responsibility for developing Canada’s immigration policy during the period that he was CIC’s Director General of Strategic Policy and Partnerships.

Mr. Grant began his career as a journalist and later was a principal speechwriter for ministerial speeches.

He holds a graduate degree from Leeds University and a bachelor’s degree from Carleton University.
