The Netherlands' Presidency of the European
Union hosted a conference on "Future European Cooperation
in the Field of Asylum, Migration and Frontiers" in Amsterdam
from 31 August - 3 September 2004.
This event, organized by the Netherlands' Ministry of Justice
with the support of the European Commission (ARGO) and the
co-sponsorship of Germany and Sweden, was developed in close
cooperation with the Migration Policy Institute. MPI President
Demetrios G. Papademetriou chaired the three-day event.
The conference brought together policymakers from EU member
states, the US, Canada, several non-EU European states and
international organizations, as well as leading experts
and researchers from around the world. Together, they analyzed
the progress the European Union has made in developing its
asylum, migration and frontiers policies, exchanged the
latest thinking and research in these fields, and discussed
the goals and objectives that the Union and its institutions
should focus on for the coming years.
