The office of Border and Transportation Security in the Department of Homeland Security is responsible for securing U.S. borders and transportation systems and for enforcing immigration laws. As national attention focuses on the convergence of national security, immigration and civil liberties, Asa Hutchinson will outline his vision for the agency and plans for the coming year.
According to DHS estimates, more than 500 million people cross borders into the U.S. each year, 330 million of whom are not citizens. The U.S. also shares more than 5,000 miles of border with Canada and almost 2,000 miles of border with Mexico.
