SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

MARCO MARTINIELLO is the Senior Research Director at the National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) and Lecturer in Politics at the University of Liège. He is also the director of the Centre for Ethnic and Migration Studies (CEDEM) at the University of Liège. He is Member of the Executive board of the Association Belge de Science Politique - Communauté Française de Belgique, and a member of the editorial Board of Ethnic and Racial Studies and Vice-chair of the Research Committee n°31 Sociology of Migration (International Sociological Association). Professor Martiniello has been a visiting professor or visiting fellow at the following institutions: Centre for Research in Ethnic Relations (the University of Warwick); Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI), Paris; Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, Paris; European University Institute, Florence; Institute for European Studies, Cornell University (Ithaca, New York); University of Bradford; The Remarque Institute; New York University; Columbia University. Professor Martiniello has contributed articles and book reviews to journals such as Ethnic and Racial Studies, International Migration Review, Studi Emigrazione, Migrations-Société, Hommes et Migrations, Informations sur les Sciences Sociales, Revue Suisse de Sociologie, Tijdscrift voor Sociologie, Recherches Sociologiques, Affari Sociali Internazionali, Race and Class, European Journal of Intercultural Education, Revue Tocqueville, Science Tribune. He has also written chapters for various collective books dealing with migration, ethnicity, racism and citizenship issues in the European Union and in Belgium.

MODERATOR

JOANNE VAN SELM is a Senior Policy Analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, focusing on refugee protection, international humanitarian response, and migration management. Her most recent work includes the European Commission’s “Study on the Feasibility of setting up resettlement programmes at the EU level.” Dr. van Selm coordinates MPI’s EU Visitors series. She is also a Senior Researcher at the University of Amsterdam’s Institute of Ethnic and Migration Studies and Co-Editor of the Journal of Refugee Studies. Additionally, Dr. van Selm is President of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM). During 2000-2001, she co-directed a project on Security and Refugees for the United Nations University, and has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the International Studies Association’s section on Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration. She has also published widely on temporary protection, European asylum policy, and other refugee and migration related topics.
