Thursday, August 12, 2004
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

On both sides of the Atlantic, immigrant integration policies, the problems of discrimination and racism, and the varied impact of affirmative action-type approaches have led to highly emotional political and academic debates. As a prelude to his new book Affirmative Action: Speeches, Policies and Practices in Debate (2004), Dr. Martiniello will discuss the meaning of the expression 'affirmative action' in the European context and will set out the range of arguments in favor and against affirmative action policies in Europe. What can the European Union learn from the US experience? Can affirmative action be a remedy against racism in the European Union and can it be a useful tool in the process of "integration" of ethnic immigrant minorities?

Speaker: Marco Martiniello, Senior Research Associate at the National Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS), Lecturer in Politics at the University of Liège and Director of the Centre d'Études de l'Ethnicité et des Migrations (CEDEM)

Moderator: Dr. Joanne van Selm, Senior Policy Analyst, Migration Policy Institute
