Daily Life as Crisis:
Palestinian Refugees and the Work of UNRWA Today
Event Summary
Panelist Bios

Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and Gaza are in the front line of confrontation between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants, with many attacks on Israeli civilians apparently originating from within refugee settlements, and these settlements in turn bearing the brunt of some of the retaliatory Israeli security operations.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) provides education, health, and relief and social services to 3.9 million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, the Syrian Arab Republic, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. With the continuing violence in Israel and the West Bank bringing destruction of property, disruption of almost all economic activity, and many injuries to civilians, the demands on UNRWA services have increased enormously while many of its operations have been severely constrained. Ms. Abu-Zayd will discuss the challenges facing her agency in the midst of the continuing turmoil.
