The Work of the Global Commission on International Migration: Priorities and Expectations Events > Event Announcement

April 29, 2004 Panelist Bios
Event Summary

As part of MPI’s Leaders' Forum, the Co-Chairs of the Global Commission on International Migration, Dr. Mamphela Ramphele and Mr. Jan O. Karlsson will introduce “The Work of the Global Commission on International Migration: Priorities and Expectations.” The Executive Director of the Commission’s Secretariat, Dr. Rolf Jenny, and Mr. Jeff Crisp, Research Director, will also be available to answer questions.

In a report presented to the United Nations General Assembly entitled “Strengthening of the United Nations: an agenda for further change,” (September 2002) UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan identified migration as a priority for the international community. With this in mind, the Secretary-General established a Migration Working Group, which recommended the creation of a Global Commission to enlarge common understandings and consensus on the dynamics of international migration and the framework for greater international governance in this field.

Subsequently several governments came together to support the establishment of the Global Commission. Independent and made up of distinguished figures from all regions and ranges of migration experiences, the mandate of the Commission is to
place international migration on the global agenda;
analyze gaps in current approaches to migration and examine inter-linkages with other issue areas; and
present recommendations to the United Nations Secretary-General and other stakeholders.

With international discussions of migration policy largely stalemated and the issue climbing the policy agenda in all regions of the world, expectations from the Global Commission are running high.
