The Migration Policy Institute is currently hiring for the following positions:


SENIOR POLICY ANALYST (Labor Economist; Economic Demographer or Quantitative Sociologist)

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration policies, seeks an exceptional senior analyst to direct the Institute’s work on immigration’s economic and labor market impacts.  The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to conceptualize, conduct, and report research on key issues to a broad policy audience. The successful candidate will be deeply knowledgeable about immigration and its role in, and effects on, the economy and labor markets and have strong analytic skills. A PhD in the fields indicated above is strongly preferred.

Salary will be very competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ph.D. or combination of equivalent education and experience in relevant social science disciplines (as noted above);
  • Sophisticated understanding of issues and related research experience pertinent to immigration’s economic and labor market effects (including patterns of workforce demand, immigrants’ fiscal and economic contributions, their mobility, and wage and employment effects, for example);
  • Strong analytical skills and experience working with large databases; ability to work in collegial research teams;  proven ability to complete projects within time and budget guidelines;
  • Ability to think conceptually and write lucidly, leading to the production of peer review-quality products;
  • Excellent oral communications and presentational skills; and
  • Recognized standing in the research and policy worlds.

Preferred

  • PhD degree in one of the social sciences, together with at least 5 years relevant experience;
  • Substantial publications record (both academic and non-academic);
  • Experience with fund-raising for research.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • With members of MPI senior staff, manage and lead the Institute’s work on immigration and labor markets;
  • Design and direct research projects, including analysis of existing data and collection of new data;
  • Staff a set of high-level working groups composed of prominent policymakers and experts focusing on differing dimensions of economic impacts and their implications for policy;  
  • Write and assume responsibility for production of research reports, articles, and policy briefs;
  • Identify and respond to new funding opportunities.

Policy Analyst/Senior Policy Analyst - International Program

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration policies, seeks an exceptional analyst to help anchor key parts of the Institute’s International Program.  The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities will be to help lead the Institute’s work on the Transatlantic Council on Migration (the Council), a new signature MPI initiative. The Council is a unique deliberative body that examines vital policy issues and informs migration policymaking processes in North America and Europe.  The successful candidate will be deeply knowledgeable about European Union-level immigration and integration processes while also being expert on the policies of one or more key EU Member States. Demonstrated familiarity with key portions of the migration research literature is a must.  Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate or professional degree(s) with several years of relevant experience
  • Evidence of extensive analytical experience with a commensurate publications record
  • Broad knowledge of EU migration policies and extensive understanding of key transatlantic policy differences and similarities
  • Ability to think conceptually, write lucidly, and edit effectively
  • Proven skill in generating, developing, and carrying through ideas for projects and high-level events
  • Exceptional judgment
  • Excellent and mature team playing/building
  • Recognized standing in the research and policy worlds

Preferred

  • PhD degree in one of the social sciences, together with relevant experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the following: the migration policies of key European countries and the EU; the sociology and economics of human mobility; immigration’s impacts on labor markets and low-skilled workers
  • Deep contacts with European analytical and policy communities
  • Fluency in one or more major European languages
  • Work permission for the United States (the job is based in Washington, DC)
  • Substantial publications record (academic and particularly non-academic)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as member of the leadership for the Transatlantic Council on Migration, being responsible for key elements of the Council’s work
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues based in both North America and in Europe as well as with outside stakeholders
  • Commissioning, preparing, and being responsible for both content and presentation of  background papers, policy memoranda, reports, articles, etc., often in collaboration with other  in-house staff but also with analysts outside of MPI.

Associate Policy Analyst - Data

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international immigration, integration and migration and development policies, seeks a highly motivated Associate Policy Analyst to conduct quantitative and qualitative research.  The work will examine a wide range of issues that include reform of US immigration policy, the role of immigrants in the labor market, and trends in immigrant integration.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3-plus years of experience or master’s degree with 1 to 2 years of experience conducting quantitative and/or research

Desired Skills

  • Experience with manipulation and analysis of large data sets (e.g., the American Community Survey, Current Population Survey, Decennial Census, and New Immigrant Survey)
  • Ability to carry out effective date collection through surveys or site visits
  • Ability to write and present results for diverse professional audiences
  • Ability to make visual representations (charts, graphs, diagrams, etc.) of complicated data
  • Expertise in MS Office products, such as Excel, Word, and Power Point (knowledge of ArcGIS a plus)
  • Proficiency with statistical software packages such as SAS and/or SPSS
  • Knowledge of a foreign language and international data sources a plus

Main Responsibilities
Project-based research

  • Design and perform analysis of data from population surveys and administrative sources on US immigration and immigrant integration
  • Edit and write regular explanatory and analytical reports, as well as contribute to and/or author MPI articles and publications. 
  • Work with research team members, including research assistants and interns, to ensure timeliness and accuracy in the completion of projects
  • Collaborate with other staff in obtaining funding for research projects, including writing proposals and grant reports
  • Aid in the planning, design, and updating of new and existing Research Tools available through the MPI Data Hub: www.migrationpolicy.org/DataHub/
  • Work with directors of the each of the MPI program areas (US Immigration; Immigrant Integration; International/European Migration; Migration Information Source; Migration and Development; and Refugees) to assess the programs’ research and data needs
  • Conduct research and write Spotlights for the Migration Information Source
  • Respond to media inquiries as necessary

Associate Policy Analyst - International Program

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration policies, seeks one or two dynamic individuals to work in the Institute’s International Program.  The primary role will be work on the Transatlantic Council on Migration (the Council), an MPI initiative. The Council is a unique deliberative body that examines vital policy issues and informs migration policymaking processes in North America and Europe.  The multifaceted role will involve substantial policy input and analysis, production of written materials, and administrative/organizational demands.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience (or equivalent)
  • Experience in analytical policy work in the NGO and/or government sector
  • Broad knowledge of US and EU migration policy
  • Ability to conduct in-depth policy analyses
  • Ability to edit and write lucidly
  • Skilled in generating and developing ideas for projects and events
  • Demonstrated professionalism and judgment
  • Excellent and mature team player/builder

Preferred

  • Relevant Master’s degree or above, together with relevant experience
  • Knowledge of the migration policies of key European countries and the EU; economics of mobility; migration impacts on labor markets
  • Fluency in one or more major European languages
  • Work permission for the United States preferred (the job is based in Washington, DC)

Office Manager

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration policies, seeks a motivated and energetic individual to manage general office and administrative functions as well as provide support to the Institute’s Communications team. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize work, and handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently orally and in writing
  • Proficient with MS Office products and familiarity with database and spreadsheet applications; Prior knowledge of Convio a strong plus
  • Familiarity with use and operations of standard office equipment (e.g., copier, printer, fax)
  • Demonstrated maturity, flexibility, and positive attitude

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Handle all reception functions including greeting and assisting visitors, managing telephone system, and maintaining clean and neat kitchen and reception areas
  • Order and maintain stock of office and kitchen supplies
  • Serve as main point of contact to building management and equipment vendors, oversee smooth and efficient operations, and troubleshoot any office and equipment problems
  • Process vendor invoices (accounts payable) and checks (accounts receivable)  
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties such as photocopying, faxing, filing, and collating
  • Send and route mail and other correspondence
  • Draft routine correspondence and reports
  • Maintain and update the contact database
  • Compile mailing lists and merges for events and program marketing

Special Assistant to the President

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration, seeks a dynamic early mid-level professional to provide direct substantive and management support to the Institute’s President.  The Special Assistant to the President will be primarily responsible for supporting critical relationships and projects with and on behalf of the President, serving as a liaison between the President and in-house staff, and ensuring that program activities are coordinated and synergies maximized.

Qualifications

  • Early mid-level professional with a bachelor’s degree and 7+ years of experience or a master’s degree and 3+ years of experience
  • Public policy background and broad policy understanding of migration-related issues a strong plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including strong verbal, writing, editing, and effective listening skills
  • Ability to successfully interact with people at all seniority levels inside and outside the Institute
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Interest in and commitment to performing a critical support role while working in a growing, fast-paced, and diverse environment
  • Fluency in at least one other language required (Spanish preferred); fluency in a third major language highly desirable
  • International experience a strong plus
  • Proficiency in MS Office and computer applications
  • Applicants must demonstrate sound political and policy judgment, maturity, flexibility, and the ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality as well as to take initiative and work proactively to solve problems with little guidance

Job Responsibilities

Director of Finance and Administration

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of
national and international migration policies, seeks a dynamic individual with significant experience in nonprofit finance and grants management to serve as its Director of Finance and Administration.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance or related degree with 5 to 10 years of experience or a master’s degree with 3 to 7 years of experience in a comparable senior management position, preferably at a nonprofit
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) preferred
  • Practical knowledge and experience with financial and budget planning, grants and operational management, and audits in nonprofit organizations
  • Superior leadership, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a direct and persuasive manner to convey financial and other technical information in simple, straight-forward terms
  • Ability to work effectively and collaborate with staff and entire management team
  • Ability to identify organizational problems and opportunities, assess critical issues, and construct comprehensive solutions

Duties and Responsibilities

Fiscal Management

  • Work with the President, senior management and staff to develop, oversee, and manage an annual organizational budget of over $3.5 million
  • Conduct and oversee the day-to-day, month-end, and year-end financial and accounting activities
  • Create and manage processes to develop financial forecasts, monitor budgets and program funds, and reconcile accounts
  • Produce financial reports for senior management and the Board of Directors
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to the President, Board, and senior management on financial decisions and performance criteria
  • Develop proactive solutions and bring new ideas to improve organizational performance and governance
  • Develop controls to ensure that policies are effectively and accurately implemented and in compliance with IRS and other federal, state, and local requirements and regulations
  • Handle all information requests for government agencies and tax audits
  • Handle all legal matters and use of outside counsel by auditors or lawyers
  • Develop and support relationships with outside fiscal experts (accounting firm, auditor, bank, and investment professionals, etc.)

Grants/Contracts Management

  • Establish and monitor systems and procedures to manage all contract and grant requirements
  • Consult with program directors and project staff to produce financial reports as requested by funders and ensure timely compliance with reporting and invoicing requirements
  • Ensure that project budgets are incorporated into MPI’s financial reporting system and check approved budgets with reports issued to program funders

Human Resources and Office Management

  • Manage human resources functions, including recruitment, payroll, and benefits administration, and ensure procedures are in compliance with all applicable laws and reporting requirements
  • Work with office manager to maintain information technology systems, equipment, and procedures for the efficient use of office resources
