Wolfgang Lutz

Wolfgang Lutz is leader of the World Population Program of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), director of the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Professor of Applied Statistics at the WU-Vienna and Professorial Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Ageing. He is Co-Principal Investigator of the Asian MetaCentre for Population and Sustainable Development and serves on the Board of Directors of PRB (Population Reference Bureau), the Berlin Institute for Population and Development and is member of the US National Academy of Sciences Committee on Population.

In the next two decades, the world will face two major — and opposing — demographic challenges: rapid population growth and rapid population aging. In an increasingly economically interdependent world, policymakers will simultaneously face a strain on resources caused by population growth and a shortage of labor spurred by the graying of the population.
