Rediscovering Resettlement:
Human Rights Day Briefing on Transatlantic Refugee Protection
Event Announcement
Panelist Bios

Left to Right: Joanne van Selm and Kathleen Newland, MPI, and Bill Frelick, Amnesty International USA
On both sides of the Atlantic, approaches to refugee resettlement are the focus of increasing interest and discussion. However, while the United States and European Union are both focusing on resettlement as a protection tool, the actions and policies being described are not identical; nor does either side have a monopoly on good practice.

In a paper made possible through the support of the German Marshall Fund of the USA, Gregor Noll, Assistant Professor of International Law at Lund University in Sweden and Joanne van Selm, Senior Policy Analyst at MPI, seek an understanding of the differing approaches to resettlement and its future on both continents. This latest MPI Insight, "Rediscovering Resettlement" examines whether reinvigorating resettlement may help resolve some of the refugee protection challenges faced in the United States and the European Union and to what extent resettlement can respond specifically to current worldwide protection challenges.

WHO:

Joanne van Selm, “Rediscovering Resettlement” Report Author and Senior Policy Analyst, MPI, will present the paper’s findings

Bill Frelick, Director of Refugee Programs at Amnesty International USA and co-author of the GMF-funded ECRE-USCR report "Responding to the Asylum and Access Challenge: An Agenda for Comprehensive Engagement in Protracted Refugee Situations,” will comment on the report

Moderator: Kathleen Newland, Co-Director, MPI
