Professor Wayne Cornelius, an expert in immigration issues from the University of California, San Diego will review the U.S. border enforcement strategy of the past ten years and provide an assessment of its consequences in terms of deterring unauthorized migration, changing Mexico-to-U.S. migration patterns and reshaping human smuggling operations. He will also be discussing deaths among unauthorized border-crossers as well as the U.S. government's recently implemented "lateral repatriation program" (transporting migrants apprehended in Arizona to various points along the Texas border for repatriation to Mexico). Dr. Cornelius will also discuss several alternatives to current U.S. immigration control policy.
