Immigration is changing the face of Europe and contributing to the transformation of its economy. Placing a high premium on knowledge and information professionals, the new economy draws high-skilled professionals, low-skilled job seekers and holiday travelers to its centers. Europe's policy makers are concerned, however, that many immigrants from developing countries are failing to connect to this information-based economy, thus reinforcing socio-economic dislocations. Nevertheless, some immigrant entrepreneurs are demonstrating interesting new paths of socio-economic development. This holds particularly true for the rapidly growing tourist and leisure industry. Ethnic commercial precincts and ethnic festivals attract visitors, fuel employment opportunities, enhance the quality of urban life, generate urban socio-economic development and foster the branding of gateway cities in the global information economy. On Wednesday, August 27, the Migration Policy Institute will host a breakfast briefing on Immigrant Entrepreneurship and the Tourist Industry in Europe. This briefing is part of MPI's series on "Migration Policy, Politics and Processes in the EU" sponsored by the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, DC. Our guest speaker will be DR. JAN RATH, Co-director of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Dr. Rath will be co-presenting with DR. CHING LIN PANG of the Center for Equal Chances and against Racism, Brussels. Please join us for what is sure to be a lively discussion. This breakfast briefing will take place from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in the Migration Policy Institute's Conference Room (third floor, Suite 300) at 1400 16th Street, NW. Light refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP with acceptances only to Ana Claros at (202) 266-1940 or aclaros@migrationpolicy.org. WHO:
