On July 1, 2003, Italy took over the rotating Presidency of the European Union from Greece. On assumption of the six-month term, the Member State holding the Presidency has the opportunity to make its own mark on EU issues. Immigration has been high on the agenda of several recent presidencies, including that of the Greek government. While Greece sought to regain some ground from the right wing political parties, Italy is one of those Member States, which has a right-wing governing coalition. What will Italy's agenda be? What impact does Italy seek to have on immigration and on refugee protection? On Wednesday, July 16, 2003, MPI will host a Breakfast Briefing on The Italian Presidency's Asylum and Immigration Agenda. Christopher Hein, Director of the Italian Refugee Council, and Chair of the Executive Committee of the European Council on Refugees and Exiles, will join us to give the NGO perspective on the government's plans and an insight to the aims of Italian civic society organizations as they lobby the government over the coming months.
