Reform of Board of Immigration Appeals
Event Summary

In August 2002, the Attorney General ordered dramatic changes in the Board of Immigration Appeals in order to clear a 56,000 case backlog. These changes included an expedited appeals process, under which an immigrant’s appeal may be rejected by a single member of the Board, as well as a decision to substantially reduce the size of the Board once the backlog is eliminated. The new process is currently being challenged in federal court. There also are unofficial reports that five members of the Board will lose their positions when the reduction plans are implemented.
