Humanitarian Conditions in Afghanistan

With war clouds gathering over Iraq, policy makers have shifted their focus from the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Yet millions of Afghans continue to struggle to reclaim lives and livelihoods disrupted by war in conditions of tenuous security and harsh environmental constraints. The International Committee of the Red Cross continues to maintain its largest delegation anywhere in the world to help Afghanistan meet basic humanitarian needs, particularly medical and food requirements. It also promotes the observance of humanitarian law, including proper treatment of prisoners, among all armed forces in Afghanistan.

WHO:

  • Mr. Reto Meister, Delegate General for Asia for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
  • Kathleen Newland, Co-Director of the Migration Policy Institute (Chair)
WHAT: Discussion on the daunting challenges facing ICRC and other agencies working in Afghanistan. As the ICRC's senior delegate for Asia, Mr. Meister will also be prepared to answer questions about the organization's work in Burma, Indonesia, China, and the Koreas.

WHEN: Thursday, February 6 8:30 - 10:00 AM

WHERE: Migration Policy Institute Conference Room 1400 16th Street, NW Suite 300

RSVP: Ana Claros at (202) 266-1940 or aclaros@migrationpolicy.org
